It wasn't easy. It took decades to put it in place: complete control of the judiciary, dominance of the legislature, creating a vast alternate-reality echo chamber, dividing the public and getting half of them to be willing to accept a complete bypass.

Public sector workers are normal people. Quitting is saying "I'm not participating in this circus". And leaves less ambiguity than when fired
They can always swear allegiance to the King of England (King of Canada), or if they like Nazi salutes, Mexico. Not sure I like Trump, but the American people deserve a government of their choosing, without obstruction.
