Ask HN: Is anyone else picky about which monospace font(s) you use?

I looked at and tried a bunch of different fonts in nvim: DM Mono, Jetbrains Mono, and 0xproto to name a few. I tried looking for good alternatives to Code Saver, especially free ones, but every time I switch back to Code Saver, I like it much more. I kept switching back and forth between a given font and Code Saver to see how much I really like said font rather than if I got used to it. It's not that other fonts are bad, I'm just so attached to Code Saver. I wish many other fonts did appeal to me.

I've essentially set mine once and never gave it another thought.

I'm curious, do you use your font just in the editor or system wide? If the former, is the font bothering you in other applications?

I use it in Neovide and Kitty. I just can't let go of Code Saver when trying other fonts in Neovide.

I'm in a never-ending cycle of wanting to find a better monospace font, spending countless hours looking through various alternatives and coming back to the one I'm currently using.

After using Ubuntu Mono for many many years I've switched to IBM Plex Mono and basically can't find a better font for me. At this point it's like my eyes are so used to this font I could never use anything else, despite the fact that my brain wants to try something new. So it's my default choice for any monospace font that I can set up.

Completely agree that it's hard to beat IBM Plex Mono. And although it doesn't matter much in many contexts in which I use a monospaced font, it has really nice italics, which most monospaced fonts don't.

Fira Mono is also extremely well done, as you'd expect for a typeface from Erik Spiekermann.

I'm not picky at all. If the font is legible, I'm good.

no, DejaVu Sans Mono Book is the default one in my OS and it looks ok

I’m so picky a made an entire website about them (https://www.programmingfonts.org/) … yet I’ve been using San Francisco Mono exclusively, basically since it was introduced in 2016. It’s quietly perfect. For years before that it was Input Mono that did it for me.
