Wow, I did not expect that. This post led to a massive dose of nostalgia (Stanford alum who's been banished to the east coast).

Minor suggestion -- it would be cool to have an option to overlay building names. This is really neat -- thanks for sharing.

We realize that map is too static now and we`re going to add descriptions for buildings and areas, so it will be more intersing to scrutinize around.
how was this map created?
By ourselves. And we are creating iPad app where anyone can creates such beautiful buildings and maps of real cities.
Can't wait to see how things work. I just signed up for beta. Are you gathering photos for texture map? In that case, how can an user take pictures of building roofs? how do you make sure the user made models are of the correct proportion? What if I make my home ridiculously tall to stand out. Am I allowed to do graffiti in your world?
1. We don't gather photos, we give the sets of prepared textures to users, so they can customize this textures and apply it to the building. 2. We will pre-moderate building models. First time we will do it by ourselves, then active users will have a chance to become a moderator. 3. We don't actually like "tags" and don't want to add it to our map but if graffiti is really cool like Banksy's works, we will add it. :)
Maybe I should dust off that copy of SimCity I have laying around somewhere...

In all seriousness, fantastic job! People should be sure to check out night view as well. Oh, and I can't wait to see what Stanford looks like in 2050 -- maybe Ray Kurzweil will still drop in for an occasional lecture?
