I wonder if most of this talk for CEO’s is external using their own anxieties. Sergei Brin talking about 60 hour weeks, Mark Zuckerberg going extremely hardcore at Facebook.
They’re sort of trying to drive fear into their software engineers to work harder, but why?
Partially they probably really are worried that if individuals can 10x their productivity they can run circles around these old companies. Mark has to be worried about the coming explosion in content. If that content is not on Facebook, he’s screwed. Google has been faltering for a while, but I have to imagine in ways that won’t be fixed by everyone just working harder,
And yet that seems to be the only lever they think they have?
But then, this guy also owns a GenAI company so he’s not exactly unbiased.
We seem to have forgotten the point of having a functional economy, which is to provide people a means to exist. Bots writing code to interact with other bots, ad infinitum. Where will the revenue come from? Broke, jobless consumers?
