That which can be bought, can later be sold. The more crypto the U.S. govt holds, the bigger a weapon future administrations will have against the market caps of these currencies.
Like many projects of this administration so far, this seems quite short-sighted.
I heard this interesting take that the administration's current political strategy is to saturate the media with meaningless news (like this), by taking headline-oriented actions everyday, thus silencing the opposition and the mainstream media in general.
If a major government holds a good chunk of crypto, then it invalidates the only use case (currency that no centralized government has a control of) pro-crypto world was able to come up with, no? US will have more or less control if its pricing due to ability of being able to sell, no?
The pro-crypto world is entirely, 99% speculative investors and bagholders at this point. They literally give no shit about use cases. They just want it to go up. They don't even grasp what they are buying really. They vomit what they heard before.
