Interestingly enough, the EU has imposed tariffs in the past, and it never made national news or linked on HN:
-Airbus-Boeing Dispute (2019-2024): Stemming from a long-running WTO case over subsidies, the EU imposed tariffs on $4 billion of U.S. goods in November 2020:
-10% tariffs on U.S. aircraft (e.g., Boeing planes).
-25% tariffs on ketchup, cheddar cheese, tractors, tobacco, and sweet potatoes.
-Digital taxes on US tech companies
-Agricultural Goods: 20-50% due to protective measures for EU farmers.
Yes, tariffs, despite all the trade agreements, have never quite gone away entirely. But it has been a while since we've had an administration try to make them a central element of trade policy and foreign policy.
