Not that I'm defending 23andMe, but... I must be missing something - verifying that you are the account holder, and making sure you aren't using a password that has been breached is a dark pattern?
Was your colleague's password also exposed in a breach? Because if not, they would have seen a different UX than you did.
At least, I'm assuming you used a breached PW, if they are complaining it is not unique to them. There isn't any other way they would know it wasn't unique.
