Should I be learning about program memory saving techniques?

In programming class the lecturer is always pointing out small methods to small methods so you can save yourself bytes of memory and then always goes on to say how the program will run perfectly fine regardless.

My question is to what scale do small memory saving techniques make an impact and how valuable are they even to learn?
