I wonder if there would be any merit to WordPress building native oAuth provider support into core? There are some plugins that do this, and WordPress.com offers oAuth provider support, but having it across the board would be cool. This would (hopefully) help mitigate situations like this.

You are not allowed to use "wordpress" in the top-level domain name. It's a trademark issue.
