Does it have anything to do with Starbucks? How do you know?
Probably has nothing to do with Starbucks. Just bad timing with a company that needs a lot of 9s of uptime.
One would hope the frontend page has NOTHING to do with payments.
post hoc ergo propter hoc
Your logic is infallible... I mean fallacious!

CTF challenge was Stripe. Not Square. Close enough though :)
Are both the main site and the API not functioning at the moment? This would be less of an issue if payments could still be processed during this time
The title is unnecessarily provocative-- Square wouldn't magically eradicate downtime after a starbucks deal.

And the website being down is different from the service not working. [Edit: the payment app doesn't work on my iPhone either. I guess I spoke too soon]

Neither the API nor the frontend site are working for me.
squareup.com is still up.

Edit: Apparently it was a cached page in my browser.

Square.com is now using squareup.com SSL certificate.

Does this mean Square, Inc. already acquired square.com?

Edit 2:

square.com automatically redirects to square.com

whois info still says that square.com owned by Square Enix.

maybe they should call it squaredown...
Am I going nuts? Because squareup.com for me is down.

At least this is happening when the vast majority of the shops that accept Square are closed.
All those cabs in SF that have worked out how to dodge the taxes they have to pay would have felt the pain.
I would prefer that a mod change the title to remove the implication that Starbucks caused the outage. If a user believes that Starbucks did cause the outage, or that the the temporal proximity of these two events is significant, I suggest a blog post explaining the significance.

"Square is down" is a perfectly acceptable title, IMO.

This story doesn't need to exist
There are prostitutes at the Rosewood that had to get their johns to bring cash! It is a disaster!
This has been killed. But:
