French PM looks to scrap two public holidays in bold bid to cut national debt (bbc.com)

On arriving in France to start a new job, I was surprised to find that the French don't roll-over to Monday those bank holidays which land on the weekend. Some years it turns out that quite a few do, and that's know as une année du patron.

"He said the various bank holidays had turned the month of May into a gruyère - a Swiss cheese full of holes"

Can't say I understand how scrapping the holidays cuts the national debt, but points for the fun analogy from the politician proposing this.
