Makes me think of Basecamp at the beginning.
Even earlier than the 1970's it could be seen that most MVP's primary purpose is deception, software or not.

A lot of times they can be deceiving themseles most of all, even when financially viable it appeals to a "minimum" type customer and silently excludes or alienates many other types of untapped prospects.

Why settle for the tip of the iceberg?
