This is not about creating a team but about managing expectations. Not that I'm opposed to that, just a heads up that this has nothing to do with building a productive team.
With respect to managing expectations, I would go one step farther and say. Dont let your PM or sales team make any hard delivery promises if that can be avoided at all.
+1, a lot of problems can definitely be avoided if you involve your engineering team early on alongside your PM when a new customer is about to be onboarded.
