Ask HN: Who's best positionned to use data center after the AI bubble pops?

3 points by phtrivier ↗ HN
There is a notorious rush to build data centers tailored to either training or inference for LLM, hoping that the mere scaling will build AGI.

Assumong that the bubble pops, and those data center suddenly become less valuable. Who would buy them, and to do what ?

Lower added value compute ? Online game rendering ? Science labs ?

You've posed this as a loaded question. Before asking it might be wise to first establish that there is an AI bubble (and that it pops).
A large part of the data center bubble is crypto mining operations that pivoted to AI. That was a very squishy part of the business already. They have no credible pivots left.

Some of that will get absorbed by market leaders including OpenAI. In the short term that's good for OpenAI. They could pick up some bargains, and doing so will divert some attention from their unachievable growth plans.
