Hi, I'm Michael Geary. I've programmed in many languages and environments over the years. Some of my current interests are:
• Developer experience. I love helping my fellow developers solve problems, and building tools to make their jobs easier and more enjoyable.
• Aviation and geographic data. For example, airspace and obstacle data importers for Wing; election results and voter information maps for Google; many interactive maps for other companies.
• Hardware interfacing. In a way, I am a "full stack" developer, but my stack may involve a front end to a piece of hardware rather than the cloud. I first got into programming via ham radio, so RF hardware remains an interest.
• Designing and building APIs. Too often an API is designed by exposing the internals of whatever system provides the API. My philosophy is the opposite: start with the apps. I like to build a series of sample apps before starting on the API. This way I can imagine what API will make those apps and others like them easy to build.
• Talk with users! I don't like to sit in a back room cranking out code. I want to make sure it's the right code for what my users need, and that it's easy to maintain and improve as we learn more about what they want.
Open to full time or contract.
I look forward to talking with you!

Senior iOS engineer / consultant (12+ years). I build and rescue iOS and Vision Pro apps that have to work: medical devices, high-traffic consumer apps, and anything where your previous freelancer said “not possible”.
I am usually brought in for the awkward parts: background reliability, performance/crash triage, architecture refactors, and migrations (SwiftUI, TCA, Swift Concurrency).
Available for MVP builds, agency oversight, joining your team for a sprint or three, and due diligence (I read the codebase and tell you what’s solid, what’s duct tape, and what it’ll take to fix).

I'm open to a new job. My main goal is learning, so I'm particularly interested in roles that would let me learn more about technologies and topics I am interested in.
I have a Master's in Mathematics, with a specialization in Discrete Maths and Theoretical Computer Science. I really enjoy Logic and Number Theory, so I'd be very keen to work on things like formal verification or cryptography. You can find my master's thesis on my website. I'm also interested in compilers and applications of graph theory to computer networks and operating systems.
I have ample professional experience with Go, and have dabbled a fair amount with Rust, a somewhat smaller amount with Elixir, Clojure and ClojureScript in my spare time. I'd be very interested in continuing my exploration of Clojure and ClojureScript, or building more with Elixir or Rust.
I use the FreeBSD operating system as my daily driver, and would be thrilled to use it professionally as well. I also have ample experience with Linux, having used Ubuntu and Debian as daily drivers, and Debian in a professional context for years.
In terms of what I can offer, I'm honest, I'm kind, I'm motivated, rigorous and curious. I'm a good writer, and I enjoy writing documentation, and technical texts. I have over five years of experience as a professional developer, I have written a LOT of Go code, and I'm comfortable debugging complex systems.
I can collaborate on large projects, having worked full time at a large tech company for several years and made a few open-source contributions.
I can work well with clients - I spent over a year working as a salesperson in a very busy Paris H&M. While there, my then manager gave me what is, over 7 years later, still my favorite professional feedback: "you get along with everyone".
you can find my personal site at https://arielche.net/
and you're welcome to email me with any questions or requests for further information that you might have.

Do you need the expertise of a seasoned software engineer for a project but don't have the budget for someone full-time? Are you willing to have the project completed asynchronously, on an hourly basis, in around 1-15 hours per week? If so, we should talk (the introductory call is free). I have around a decade of experience (see below) and am available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays as well as some times on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (MWF I teach math & Latin at a small classical school). My standard rate is $100/hour for async work, $150/hour if there's tighter deadlines. Discounts available for special circumstances :)
Work experience:
- Built a tool (non-AI) to read Latin texts and generate fully-parsed glossaries. I used this tool in a few Latin readers I've published recently.(Tech: Clojure, Ada)
- Built a billing system, using Stripe integration, for a B2B SAAS app.
- Fractional team lead for Learnics. Wrote a bibliography generator that supports MLA, APA, and Chicago style. (Tech: Vue, Firebase)
- Built the front-end for https://app.composer.trade, a systematic trading app. Took the company from designs all the way through launch. (Tech: Clojure/Script, Firebase)
- Created a fuzz-testing tool that takes in a language grammar (EBNF) and uses that to generate syntactically correct random text in that language.
- Built a video-hosting and sharing site for family videos. (Tech: Reagent, Clojure/Script, S3, CouchDB, Stripe)
- Created the https://github.com/deckeraa/couchdb-auth-for-ring/ open-source library that enables you to use CouchDB as an authentication back-end for Ring apps.
- Led a team of ~17 software developers for the business intelligence module of a large healthcare IT company.
* Have a slow web application that’s often down?
* Want to improve security and don’t know where to start?
* Have a legacy system that needs to be replaced?
* Are considering an acquisition but not sure about the technical side?
I can help with that. For example, in the past I have:
* Massively improved performance and reliability for a data visualization platform.
* Led a large effort to improve security for a cybersecurity SaaS.
* Built a micropayments system for a prominent media startup.
* Rebuilt an aging e-learning platform from scratch for a GDPR compliance SaaS.
* Conducted technical due diligence for acquisitions.

Looking for just about anything on the horizon. Opportunities or career advice. Pursuing a bachelors in computer engineering at the moment.
Personally I'm looking for a job that I feel like actually has some kind of positive benefit on the world, or something that seems particularly challenging or interesting. This can range anywhere from a note-taking application to managing retirement funds to writing a Typescript to Go compiler to writing a new database. I'm not interested in one of the 5 million AI hype cycle jobs (partly because I dislike LLMs), and I actively hate the blockchain, ads, and tracking users. I do not, and will never, compromise on privacy issues.
A list of things you should know about me and how I'm going to do my best work for you:
* I want to be able to work on something a bit more interesting than another simple REST application.
* I want my hours to be flexible, meaning when I start/end or being able to take some time in the middle of the day for groceries or a doctors appointment.
* I want to be able to come up with ideas I think would be useful/interesting and be given some time to work on them. I know that there are things I'm going to have to do for the business that aren't going to be these things, but I need some amount of time to do this or I'm going to struggle as a worker.
* I'm going to have strong opinions about all sorts of things, and I expect to be able to have a conversation about them and not just be dismissed.
* I'm going to want to improve things, and if I continuously get told "no", it's going to kill my morale.
I've previously lived in Japan a couple decades ago and studied the language intensively for 2 years at that time in one of the schools dedicated to helping foreigners go to university or get jobs there. (specifically at: 東京平田日本語学院. I almost passed JLPT N2 then, but I'm nowhere close to that level currently) I've recently been picking back up on studying Japanese again to maybe fulfill a long-held dream of going back to Japan longer than a vacation. So on the off chance you're someone in Japan hiring for a position you think I'd be a fit for (and you're not a black company), please reach out.
