Ask HN: Hardware Setup for a Beginner Tinkerer

What's a good stack to start tinkering with if I want to learn some kitchen automation? I would like to make a DIY rice cooker and other similar projects.

I recognize this could involve learning about heat and pressure too, so open to suggestions on that as well.
