Ask HN: Is Meshtastic worth it, what have you done with it?

I've been reading up on Meshtastic, the idea seems great. But I don't have an elaborate use case in mind for it, is it useful nonetheless?

Have you had any luck, or experiences with the public channels? Is it similar to Hamradio?
