Tell HN: macOS 26.4.1 bricked my MBP

6 points by rib3ye ↗ HN
on thursday i updated my mac to 26.4.1. I stepped away for lunch and came back to a bricked machine.

after a lengthy phone call, apple said bring it in for apple store support.

apple checked the machine and the next day told me it would cost $750 to repair.

this is not an isolated incident and relegated to 26.4.1:

fixes explained in those posts did work, but ended up having to wipe my machine. what the hell is going on?

Same issue here. I updated and left my machine for a few days. Came back and was unresponsive. I had to use the 26.3.1 firmware and DFU restore. I have a 16" M2 Macbook.
I managed to revive a M2 Max that was bricked by upgrading to 26.4.1. Downloaded the 26.3.1 IPSW and did a DFU revive and the machine successfully got revived. And to also help me boot into DFU, I used this tool from Asahi to remotely trigger DFU over USB: https://github.com/AsahiLinux/macvdmtool
