Ask HN: How would you grow a screen recording app after hitting $3.5K MRR?

Hey! I’m currently making $3.5K/month from a Mac screen recording app with zoom effects. It feels like I’ve hit a plateau and I’m not sure how to grow it further.

Most of my sales come from X and blog posts on my website. I’m trying to push both, but it takes a lot of time to see meaningful results.

Any non-obvious advice on how you’d grow something like this?

That'd sort of depend on what feels like obvious advice to you.
Does "advertise" count as non-obvious? It seems like you've ignored the most effective way to get traffic: pay for it.

Get ads on Mac-related blogs, subreddits, etc.

Yes, I've never tried ads for my app. But I will do it soon. Thank you!
This might still feel obvious but you’re competing against much bigger fish, to grow you need a niche. What makes you special to your customers & how can you access all of them at once, cheaply? It’s not just about ads/sales, you need to discover the trigger for your customers to buy your software & be right there to help them manage trade offs (virtually). Knowing how/why customers are choosing between you and a competitor is key… Why do folks use your app? Why might more ppl want to? Answers to these will guide your strategy & spending. Hope this helps a little!
My main differentiator is creating of polished screen recordings. It takes time to export the videos compared to the Loom solution where you can share the video instantly. There a big increase of indie hackers and founders. They are my main audience for now
