Lame stunt? I think the fact they managed to get all their haters to generate traffic AND sales for them shows an entrepreneurial spirit that we should all aspire to.

You don't have to like their product to appreciate their tactics in the market segment they are in.

From a business perspective it doesn't seem too intelligent to announce your closing down, but good for him if it generated traffic and sales.
