Ask HN: Why does Spotlight indexing get stuck in loops but Time Machine doesn't?

In particular, Spotlight indexing seems to get stuck in loops when I have older copies of my home directory under an "old" subdirectory in my home directory.

Is there a workaround (other than excluding the "old" directory from Spotlight)?
