The article doesn't mention the reason why ships need this scrubbing of barnacles and other marine growth: It radically improves fuel economy.

It's a 1-2 day job per ship depending on size of the diving crew.

It's one of the most physically though jobs there is, a great challenge for a young man wanting it.

There are robots the size of small cars that are good at this work already. There have probably been companies for leasing them negotiating contracts for flying out and doing the job weeks ago.
