I'm going to be controversial here and say that I think he is a one hit wonder. District 9 was decent (although unsubtle... "fokkin prawns!"). Elysium was a very crude political commentary on healthcare and inequality (and I can't remember much else about the film except people running around going "fok" all the time and shooting things.)
This is just 2026. Give it a few years and it will become much better. CGI also started embarrassingly bad, peaked, and then went back to bad as studios realised people just don't care that much
CGI had some very big wins early on. Jurassic Park was made in 1993, and still looks really good today.
Terminator 2 was two years earlier than that. It didn't try to be photorealistic, but it used the available tech in a way that was visually interesting.
Maybe we're waiting for a filmmaker to find the right use for it. Apparently this isn't it.
