Ask HN: ThePirateBay vs. Anthropic

Why is it that downloading a movie from Netflix and putting it for free on ThePirateBay is illegal but scraping someone’s work to train the AI models and then selling them for a fee is legal?

What’s the difference?

One is a derivative work.

This is not an appropriate venue for the question.

If you're ranting, that's not what HN is for.

If you're sincere, better ask a lawyer, or at least a law forum.

The owners of the "AI" scraper are rich. The lone "pirate" is not. That's it.
You must be young. In time, you will see that it's the general model for how things work throughout the system. Double standards. From LE, Banking, Industry, Mil, to the piratebay -- it's the inverted pyramid of power. Look around and you will see it literally everywhere. And it's about to get substantially worse.

What you will also learn is the futility of attempting to apply logic to it. Cleverly identifying the pattern will only result in cauliflower ears and a short life. It's the elephant in the livingroom you're better off pretending not to see.
