Classical AI conjures up the image of Christopher Bishop[0]. My early introduction to AI.

I suspect the theoretical side of AI is growing more, but likely focused on performance improvements on the transformer. At some point the transformer became a general purpose AI architecture.

But there's people like Yann LeCun that are exploring other architectures.
