User Stories, Story Points, SAFE, Scrum, overly complicated interfaces, burndown charts, excessive time tracking - I've tried it all, and found most of it to be a waste of time.
A few months ago I got so tired of Jira, and the rest of these project management tools, that I decided to build a self-hosted alternative.
The main ideas:
* You plan visually, like sticky notes or Miro
* Every task has dependencies, so you always know which task to pick up next
* Every task points toward a Milestone with a deadline, and every Milestone points toward another Milestone or the end goal
* Each task gets its own chat thread, instead of one messy channel for everything
* Automate it however you want - REST API, webhooks, personal access tokens
* Multi-factor authentication, e-mail validation, and more
I've been using it myself to run a housing renovation with my wife, as a real test of whether it actually holds up outside my own head. This has lead to a lot of work on the mobile layout too.
Self-hosted, one docker compose up. Solo dev project - BUSL 1.1 license (self-host/modify freely, converts to Apache 2.0 in 4 years), not taking PRs yet but bug reports/ideas are very welcome.
Its good to see alternatives, .. but its sad to see, that this is getting more and more a "salt grain in the ocean" thing. like, everyone can now build their own personalized "experience", and then try to grift out the stuff (BSL), without even knowing what the blackbox did, nor giving back (disclaimer which disallowes training while using claude heavily to produce it).
For your defense, i have not looked at your code and i will not. I only have the vibe feeling with this just by looking at it in general. Secondly, building a sustainable software and business around a software is really hard, and seeing more and more shipwrecks on github, doesnt even help the society in getting efficient and better, it just clutters the ecosysten. So dont be egoistic, and help companies to get away from atlassian, but not by producing the 1000th alternative. Just invest time and your money in tools which are already established, making them better (even if you fork it), to have a real alternative, not another experiment. please.
Still, i hope your journey will succeed in whatever direction you might go. See it as a motiviational letter, to show the world that you did it better than a lot of others.
I don't really think several of your points are fair.
On Vibecoded Blackbox: You're judging a project I have spent three months coding and testing without having tried it out or looked at the code, by your own admission - worth sitting with before calling it a grift.
On AI: Like 99+ % of developers today, I use an AI assistant while coding. That does not mean I don't test or read the code, that is your assumption. As large AI companies have used my code, my social media, my e-mails, my private pictures and much more to train AIs, I think it is fair to draw a line and find a balance e.g. as I do with the AI-training clause.
On "contribute to an existing alternative instead": A fair take, and at times more useful for the ecosystem. But sometimes you also have to try to realize your own visions. Through years of working in the private sector for someone else, I find it meaningful to spend my free time building something shaped exactly around how I plan my own projects. Even if the app will only ever help me and my close friends/family, it is still a win and then I have gained experience in the process.
On BSL: I have no plans to monetize it, I've got a full-time job. The license is just there so a corporate fork doesn't happen instead of me, not to squeeze money out of anyone.
I think it is fair to be bitter about the way AI is affecting our work. I think that most people working in IT are feeling the pressure, but I respectfully also think that letting your frustrations out on a random solo developer's project is misguided.
Hi, i appreciate and honor your answer, yes, .. i see (as also torvalds... and many coders do that), assitive AI (where people sit in between and do checking) has landed and is productively used, and im also experimenting heavily with it. And im sorry that i attacked you the way i did, as yes, this poisons innovation and demotivates people to do creative stuff. But, even after experimenting (i have not researched your persona, so i dont know your profession either, so yes i assumed a lot, but also it gave me that vibe/red flags) i see so many people just vibing dangerous stuff, and lot of businesses and people see this then granted as just using it and loosing a lot of money and even lives (healthcare, automotive industry..) and so much money and brainchild is wasted in brainrot AI.. it sucks, that no one wants to learn the basics (as im seeing also a lot of students just using ai, and not even researching the basics anymore or even trying to understand "their" code).
And then getting mad when they fail.
Art is not made by just having a armada of special expensive pencils and just managing them.. its usually made by lot of work, repetition, failing and excellence in the end.
