I don't think any company will be able to hold a significant monopoly in the space for the simple law of economics: high margins (especially combined with high absolute volumes) attract competition.
And the wider the margins and volumes the more competitors have incentives in making gigantic investments.
Nvidia doesn't have to remain a monopoly to get all the profit.
In the smartphone market, Apple isn't #1 in units but generates 75% of the profit of the whole market.
Would you rather be #1 in units or profit?
There is a reason why Apple can ask for prices only few competitors can keep up with and the reason isn't the HW for sure. Similarly with Nvidia, the margins come from the ecosystem, not the HW.

The media (especially in today's environment) works to sell ad views, not make the reader more informed.

Otherwise companies can absolutely get a monopoly and cement it. Buy up competition, pressure adversaries, hog resources and so on.
