Isn't Ontario a province? So shouldn't it be like Lake ...uh New York?

The province of Ontario is named after the lake, not the other way around.

Ontario is an aboriginal name for the lake, which the province pays homage to.

All of this is silly, but with this pattern it makes more sense to change the name of New York than to call it Lake New York.

That's because it's the Ukrainian name for the capital, Kiev was the old soviet one.
