Fastmail attack – spam going to Gmail and others

If you're a Fastmail customer, double-check your account.

I'm currently seeing what looks like a spam attack, or possibly a breached mail relay, or similar: thousands of spam-like messages are bouncing from Google Gmail back to my Fastmail account. There seems to be a deeper problem as well because the Fastmail service is showing that my account has sent more than 8000 emails today, when I've only sent a few.

I've reported this to Fastmail customer service. I use a unique very strong random password on my account, and I do not see any of the outbound emails in my "Sent" folder, so I don't know what's happening yet.

If you work for Fastmail, you've got my contact info in your support ticket. I've just now updated my password and updated my phone number to my rarer phone number, just to be safer.
