A lot of people confuse these two things. I am a father to my children, not their friend. That means that a huge part of my job is to teach them how to be well-functioning adults. Discipline is a large part of that (or "correction" if you prefer). The most effective forms of discipline are unwavering, but also unviolent.
There's also the truth that most of what children learn from their parents, they learn from watching what the parents do in their own lives. Using violence teaches violence rather than actual discipline or problem-solving.
It's crazy that not only did the author get this wrong, but then pretends like the difference is still a niche thought experiment:
