It is as old as time and you are describing the status chasers. A recent example on this site: [0]

SWEs was the status that ex-Wall St folks were chasing in the 2010s. Now they are the same ones who are crying about being a SWE and are worshiping AI companies. (Until local models running on MacBooks catch up and you will hear others saying it is not great).

Local AI is the way. It's no surprise they're drying up the hardware market for consumers. I think this is what governments should be focused on, pushing the companies to open source and provide consumer end local AI. I think there is going to be high demand for this, we're still in the beginning.
