"i do not use software that does not support musl"

I have a minimal glibc chroot for certain large programs that still won't compile with musl that I want to play around with

But I don't rely on any of those programs

Otherwise the entire userland is statically-linked

"i do not use software that refuses to statically link"

Ibid

"i do not use GNU software"

Ibid

"i refuse to compile software that requires a nonstandard yacc version, (eg bison). sometimes i patch it to support a better yacc, like byacc."

bmake is also better than gmake

"i refuse to use software that is overly large and needlessly complicated, like X11."

About 17 years ago I stopped using X11

I have not missed it at all

Built I think any time we have to use a GUI then we are using overly complicated software

Most times I'm not using a GUI, I'm using a computer where I can stay in textmode

"i do not use software written in languages that do not have a somewhat easily full-source-bootstrappable compiler."

Does this mean no rust

If rust had something like pcc or tcc, then I'd be more inclined to try it

I don't like "package managers" so the rust philosophy is not too appealing

"libedit : better than readline."

NetBSD editline, "libedit", which is used in NetBSD sh, was created by one of the authors of tcsh

The first shell to have tab complete may have been tcsh

In any event I always liked tcsh tab complete. It was fast even on the slow computers of the day

OTOH, readline was created by the original author of bash

The manpage for bash states that it is big and slow. IMHO, readline is also big and slow

I never liked readline and always avoid it where possible

Fortunately busybox does not use it

"nitro : probably the best init, works on Linux and netbsd, which is fun"

The increase in size of NetBSD init over the years is perplexing

"dropbear : better than OpenSSH. by a lot. %"

tinysshd smaller than dropbear

"quasar m4 : fork of some BSD m4 that implements some GNU m4 features. useful if you are ever unfortunate enough to require an m4"

149.56.131.15 http only, yes

The Quasar m4 author states:

"I implemented Quasar M4 because GNU M4 is nearly impossible to compile in unusual minimalist Linux environments. "

Not sure what specific problems he encountered but when I created own unusual Linux userland from scratch (own method, not LFS) I found that m4 is required for compiling flex and flex is required for compiling m4

I start with a musl.cc toolchain. NetBSD's toolchain has lex and m4, musl.cc's doesn't

"LibreSSL : better than OpenSSL"

https://www.haproxy.com/blog/state-of-ssl-stacks

"BearSSL : better than LibreSSL %%"

But no TLS1.3

"libtls-bearssl : makes libtls programs work on bearssl, which opens the door to using bearssl as the main system ssl library a little %"

I've wondered about libtls. I need to learn more

"eiwd : better than wpa-supplicant. better than iwd, no dbus. readme lies about needing gcc and glibc, likely works with compiler and libc of your choice"

It's amazing to me how after so many years wpa-supplicant has had so few alternatives

Perhaps I'm ignorant but iwd is the only one I've heard of

"reflex : better than flex"

When I compile the static binary reflex is less than half the size of flex

re2c is almost 4x the size of flex

"byacc : better than bison %"

If both bison and byacc are available (byacc installed as "yacc") reflex configure script chooses bison

"muon : better than meson %"...
