Ask HN: Is charging for software a thing of the past?

Fully on the decompile hype train here - I'm wondering how much longer the traditional software market has? I've recently been moving my app ideas over to an open source approach. Do games differ to tools, which are much more defined tasks for AI to replicate?

No, not really. There's plenty of software out there that you still pay for, or pay a license for. e.g: LittleSnitch, Jetbrains IDe, Plex, Final Cut Pro, etc
No, I just read a tweet yesterday saying that someone paid $10 per month for a stretching app, even though he could have vibecoded it in a weekend. But he didn't because of convenience.

No one can vibe-code every app they need. Maintaining everything is hard, and it drains your energy, even if you're really good at a lot of things.

Doing all sorts of things instead of focusing on your business can be a distraction. And because of AI, you can do so much more now, so distraction is something you really need to avoid.
