> I wonder if this post was planned prior to Anthropic's announcement regarding Github's inability to handle their volume of merges.
It's worth noting that Anthropic claims 30k merges/day, but they state it's in a monorepo. This alone suggests to me that they are needlessly creating their own problem.
Instead of doing trivial and obvious things such as "perhaps we could peel off a project or two into their own repo" they decide to proclaim it makes sense to them to create their own version control system.
It's like they shoot themselves in the foot, and then announce they are going to develop armoured shoes to address issues with standard shoes regarding projectile resistance.
I can't help to wonder where the competent engineering ends and self promotion starts.
I'm so tired of them whining about how hard it is to scale due to agents. First of all, GitHub uptime has always been bad, even before the MS acquisition and way before agents. Secondly, plenty of other services have much more demanding scale problems with much better uptime. How many millions of hours of video is YouTube streaming and transcoding? When was the last time YouTube went down? I'm done with the excuses and have moved to self-hosting.
I'm surprised at the level of detail presented in this post. Say what you will about the product, but I appreciate lifting the veil on what goes on behind the scenes.
How is github so bad? It regularly throws rate limit errors if you just try to see the recent commits on open source project. Was it always this way? Did Microsoft put the New Outlook team in charge of it?
