Mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, BC, Canada leaves 8 dead (6 children) [1]
Shooter used ChatGPT to plan massacre [2]
OpenAI did not respect BC privacy laws (PIPA) in training ChatGPT [3]
BC sues OpenAI in California for its role in the shooting [4]. Survivors and families of victims launch their own lawsuits against OpenAI [5]. OpenAI thinks that the "claims are not viable" [6] and a California lawsuit "is [not] logical".
OpenAI "work[s] continuously to identify potential warning signals of serious violence, while also protecting the privacy and security of the vast majority [?!?] of the more than one billion users". Of course.
The BC Privacy Commissioner (BCPC) investigates whether "the use of private information [by ChatGPT is] appropriate" in this context [7] and asks (Feb 2026) for "policies, practices" and "interactions with the user". OpenAI does not provide these voluntarily by June says needs "legal proceeding" (June). BCPC issues legal order under PIPA (September).
OpenAI opposes the order in court because "it lacks coherent rationale" and that it is already clear that "Open AI lacked accountability and didn't follow Canadian law" [8]
