Personl Portfolio Site? Do I need one? Template or from scratch?

I am currently a Junior going for my Bachelors Network Administration with a minor in Information Security. I would like to start a blog to share projects

I'm doing and simple tutorials for issues I run into. I am wondering if a portfolio/blog site built from scratch and self hosted would be a good idea (I

have taken web classes and an good with that sort of thing, but its not my area of study). Would using a template site look make me look bad?

Most of my time is dedicated to more the the networking side of the game, I'm not a web dev major.
