What's the latest in database dev? Path versus mySQL?

Currently evaluating different proposals by freelancers for the database design for cosmoCosmos (applicant for YC S13). Any thoughts on what the best one is? I have experience with mySQL, etc. in previous project and it worked fine. Aim is to build the "Tripadvisor" for beauty/cosmetics. All help appreciated.
