Ask HN: Receive push alerts on airplane wifi without payment?

After reaching crushing altitude on a Southwest flight today, I opened my iPad and noticed that I had left the wifi on AND had received a number of push alerts in the previous few minutes. I was not able to surf or read email as I had not paid for the wifi service. How did the alerts get through? Do they circumvent the proxy somehow?
