Ask HN: How to build/hack stuff?

I always come across awesome little projects by various hackers, designers, etc and wonder how they got around to build something like that?

I learned to code - a long time back, but nothing beyond that. I know OO, understand FP, MVC, TDD and what-not. But I've never built something substantial on my own.

Can one ever learn to build actual stuff?
