Ask HN: Is a for-profit TOR feasible?

I'm asking this fully admitting I don't fully understand the technical underpinnings of TOR.

Is it technically feasible to create some form of TOR that would allow people to pay for it (exact payment model doesn't matter now) through some form of consumer-facing peering agreement, and that money would get automatically sent to those (or become available to claim by those) who are running the entry/exit nodes?

Also, is there any way you could set it up that would improve latency to the point where the average user would be willing to use it without sacrificing anonymity?
