Ask HN: Has anyone done a cross vendor cloud for Higher Availability?

What I mean is, suppose you are apprehensive about trusting Amazon with all prod, has any one created a DR on Azure (or any other vendor) to improve availability? What challenges did you face (specific to web\db servers)?
