I am very excited about this initiative. While some may argue that a 'cheap phone' strategy isn't going to work in the expensive and presumably highly competitive mobile market - aka price-to-value-to-possession connotation - but I think Mozilla is doing just the right thing with its Firefox OS and low-end pricing strategy.
As the so-called smartness of smart phones becomes a commodity (already is in some ways) what would be important to people finally is the utility of the handset. And at that point pricing and workmanship of the product, and perhaps openness, would be the only deciding factor.
