Ask HN: why are there so many posts about American politics recently
I'm not American, and I feel that the recent flood of posts concerning American politics, especially all of this coverage of the NSA story, is not really relevant to the site. The submission guidelines say that "If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic." It also says: "Off-Topic: Most stories about politics [...] unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon." A few stories on the front page which I think are probably inappropriate are "Snowden Interview with Jacob Applebaum", “Why did you shoot me? I was reading a book” , "Solicitation for US Propaganda Disruption Ideas", "Terrorists vs. Bathtubs", "White House gives Homeland Security control of communications in emergencies".
I only ask because I feel the quality of the front page was a lot better a few weeks ago before this whole NSA story broke. Does anyone else agree?
Thanks.

[ 2.4 ms ] story [ 24.5 ms ] threadWhy? Because it impacts us too. There is no doubt that a majority of today's web innovation comes straight out of Silicon Valley with names like Apple, Facebook, Google being based there. Because they have global reach, data from all around the world is held by them. Even if I am not a US citizen, it affects me because if it is all true, then the US intelligence service has a wealth of information about me at the click of a button. My local government (and yours too) can't do anything to protect you from them.
I agree with you that this may sway from the original intention for Hacker News but I still think it is a very important issue that should have visibility here.
