What a poor thief, because someone he doesn't know about has access to his Iphone he is now under total surveillance.

Now read that sentence again, replacing "thief" with "person".

It's not his iPhone. (Also it's not total surveillance.)
He owns a phone that is capable of unknowingly uploading every picture taken to a third party website. Take the heartbreaking story about a phone getting stolen away and you're left with some pretty nasty residue here.
He owns a phone

No, he does not own the phone.

He doesn't own the phone. What part of theft don't you understand? its not his phone.

The prick stole it, and is using her personal data to stalk her friends and use the phone for himself. He probably stole her other goods also. He's a common thief!

>He doesn't own the phone. What part of theft don't you understand? its not his phone.

It's seems to be you not understanding that thousands of stolen items get normally sold every day, most of the time as "second hand"...

Take the heartbreaking story about a phone getting stolen away

That part is pretty integral to the story.

You might as well say "Take away the part about the pictures and you're just left with a story of a stolen phone."

Also replace 'someone' with government agency.
I'm surprised that people here are sympathizing with the criminal. Have you ever been robbed before?
what if the guy just bought the phone on the sh market and is not the actual thief?
very unlikely, most of these markets would have a standard procedure to wipe/reset everything.
They would? He could have bought it from the thief, unknowingly.
I think the creepy skype call to the guy's friend ups the probability that the guy is less than innocent. But it's not totally impossible.
And this is why you set up a way of being able to remotely hose your phone.
This is... very conflicting. On one hand, it sucks to lose your property and it feels worse when 5 fingers are involved. On the other, he's just an ordinary guy. That's really who we struggle against daily don't we? Other people.
He's not an "ordinary guy". He's a dirty, low-down thief that uses some else's property for his own gain and stalks the owner and her friends.
Not to mention he might have just bought the stolen phone from some junkie or something...
If you're buying phones from junkies, you should either expect it to be stolen (in which case, you aren't helping by buying stolen goods and you're just as bad as the thief) or wipe the whole thing.
I thought this at first too, but that video shows he's called someone from the phone. This means he had to have known the phone had a previous owner, making the unknowing purchase unlikely.

You know what's strange? After seeing some of the pics, I hoped he did purchase it unknowingly. It would have felt easier.

"I am on holiday, I am drunk and partially nude in a strange land. I am totally safe here. And my belongings can live where ever they please and I wont have to worry about them."
Oh, that makes it totally ok to steal.
No, it makes totally BS to complain about it.

A little street smarts goes a long way...

Why? Theft is theft, its fine to complain.
if this is truly in Dubai, I suggest you get in touch with Dubai Police, they are very responsive and respond even to people's tweets ..
Why don't you get him arrested ? He isn't going to loose a hand, in UAE, he will just do some jail.
This is sad. There is no proof that this person was the one who stole the phone (Of course, there is no proof that he wasn't). I wont tell you what to do, but I would never do something like this unless I'm confident that I have the right person.

Scrubbing the phone isn't as common as some make it out to be, and the result is victims becoming victims twice.

He logged into her Facebook and stalked her friends!
Don't forget her Skype too to try and sleaze on her friends.
Why would the 'thief' keep the phone? In the article it says that this happens regulary. Well but he BOUGHT a stolen phone. Yes but did he know it?

Years ago I bought some used hardware from one of my neighbours. It did not pay the full price but it was still far from cheap.

About 2 weeks later he wanted it all back because he had been cought on camera stealing it at work and his boss would not press charges if he brought it back.

Real classy. Yes, you lost your property, and that's unfortunate, indeed iritating.

Making psudeo homophobic comments about the guy? Really mature.

Wow... We are finally back at the medieval pillory? This so much (including the story how the phone got stolen) tells so much about the ex-owner. His character and all.

Instead of outing the thief, he just might ask himself, if swimming that drunk might just count of his share of the blame for the iPhone-situation he found himself in.

Aren't we (as human beings) a tad more civilized, nowadays? Or shouldn't we be?

I think the he is a she, if that matters at all.
These days, we don't blame the victim. While not exactly smart, the owner was in no way responsible for the theft. The thief did the stealing, whilst the owner merely didn't keep her belongings secured. She didn't force the man into stealing her belongings.
This looks worse for the loser (of the phone) as s/he's comprehensively shown us that s/he's enjoying being a twat, whereas the user may or may not have actually stolen it. Innocent until proven guilty? All the new user of the phone has shown is that he's clueless and a bit creepy, mostly ignorant. I imagine someone who steals stuff while wearing night vision goggles might have a tad more brains than the guy now in possession of the phone.

TLDR: Loser: you've proved nothing more than that you're a twat. Don't leave your stuff unguarded while drunk in place you don't know.

I see people here making this story about pervasive surveillance. I think that you don't realize that this device was set up by the owner with this feature with the intent of backing up his (hers?) own pictures.

The thief is using that phone without disabling that feature. The original owner didn't ask for his phone to be stolen, and most definitely didn't ask to get his thief's pictures sent to him. This is not about pervasive surveillance, it's about a thief being an idiot (which if the pictures have anything to say, travels quite a bit).

Flagged - very possibly this guy is not even the thief... I understand why you'd want revenge on whomever stole your precious phone, but this is not the way to go about it.
Back in my home island - where she lost her phone - we have a saying for being careful and not acting impulsively without thinking, which translates literally to: "you need to know how to swim and keep your clothes safe"
Idiot swan naked/drunk in foreign country leaving personal items unattended (besides drowing and/or rape being another real possibility).

iPhone gets stolen.

Person harasses thief (or second hand buyer, doesn't care to investigate) by posting "you're gay" messages along with pictures of him on a website.

A real class act all around...

1. Can you not wipe it with Find My iPhone to stop the harassment?

2. You have no proof this guy didn't just buy the phone from someone. He's seems like a creep but that doesn't mean he stole it. Putting his name and pictures of him on the internet is pretty low.

3. You have no one to blame but yourself. You left your phone and valuables on the beach while you were in the water and you were drunk enough that someone lying under a chair with your valuables on it didn't make you think twice even when they didn't response to you.

It's funny how OP tumblr is turning against him/herself.

Reading the comments, everybody is okay with the thief. But call the thief a douchebag and everybody looses their minds.

So did original owner try to ask him to return it?
