More private, free alternatives to Gmail, Ymail, Outlook, etc?

Obviously not expecting the level of privacy that you'd get from the paid services out there (and even then, apparently that's not foolproof), but I'd prefer something a bit more private than Gmail - some service that doesn't scan your emails. Preferably free? :)
