Poll: Do you upvote stories on the new submissions page?

Do you look at the new submissions page to upvote new stories? I'm trying to see if the stories make it to the front page due to people upvoting, or due to people voting automatically when they submit the same link.

i get to HN via google reader, so just front page stuff.

i do, and i've noticed that it makes a difference. that is, i'll see what i consider to be an interesting story on the new page and not the front page. after i upvote, i'll see it appear on the front page...and then get upvoted a fair amount more.

i suspect that had i or the other new watchers not found that story, it would have been lost to obscurity. these stories, in my experience, aren't high rollers, but they are reasonably interesting. personally they're much more interesting than the fluff that often passes by the front page...by which i mean: why no customization?! hn: reasonable community; dearth of features.

Rarely, but I wish I did more often just looking at New. I think a lot of worthy material never makes it to the front page.

Pageviews for the new page are about 8% of those on the frontpage.

is that 8% for people who click new by themselves, or does that also include the people who get taken to the new page when they submit a new story?

Total, but the number of submissions is probably less than 5% of the number of new page views.

I think it is mostly due to inertia.It will be good if we can have one new story featured on frontpage always to get more exposure for the new stories

I only resort to the 'new' page once I've read everything on the front page, everything on my other news bookmarks and am still bored.

Maybe the front page could include a couple random (and marked new) stories from the new page.

I never actually look at the new or front pages directly as I only access HN via RSS. Come to think about it, I don't think I've ever upvoted a story as they're already popular by time I find out about them!

I check the new page. But I only upvote a link if I think I will need to refer to it again. There are lots of links that were interesting to read but I don't upvote, because they are more disposable.

Maybe we should have an RSS feed only for the new stories for people to upvote..

I find myself going to the new submissions page quite often. The frequency of technical articles there that are interesting (to me) seems to be higher than the front page, whereas stuff re-submitted from Reddit / linkbait / etc seems to be more prominent on the front page (maybe that's just my personal impression).
