Ask HN: Are WebSockets blocked in Saudi Arabia and Singapore?

Hello. I'm running a webservice that relies heavily on WebSockets to deliver instant updates (chat etc.) to users. It's a plain js/nodejs/redis stack for those interested.

While looking into problems some users had I discovered that in countries who are also known for their internet censorship, WebSockets don't appear to work.

I have confirmed that at least in Saudi Arabia and Singapore WebSockets only work when the user uses a VPN.

So are these countries actively breaking the Internet? It looks like it to me.

I was not able to find any information on such behavior of SA and Singapore on the internet. I would be interested in what HN knows about it.
