Tell HN: I'm so sick of this

9 points by drnooo ↗ HN
I've been a member since the mid 2000s under one name or another- usually when I get embarassed about a comment I made or want to limit how many comments with certain types of info are grouped together by username at least, I'll create a new user. I've quite HN like 5 times it seems. Now I'm quitting again.

The population on HN has absolutely no sense of humor. Not trying to be mean, but I think HN is a lot farther on the autism spectrum than I care for. It's more intelligent than slashdot, but I don't think PG or others that help manage it really realize how much downvoting is abused.

I waste TOO much time here and am creating NOTHING. NOTHING at all. I have no idea why I'm even telling you all any of this, either. Goodbye.

The upvote-only strategy works really well for submissions. I'm curious if it would work with comments too.
Yes people should lighten up, and then when joke threads are always the top comment, novelty accounts are always expected, tech news becomes whatever Engadget and Gizmodo are plagiarizing, meme-images become upvoted comments, and the 'leaders' list gets dislodged by IFuckedYourMom and CitationNeeded, in that order, we can reflect back on why letting funny comments become normal isn't such an awesome idea.

Your comment is exactly the reason I want to leave. If you don't believe that you can have an intelligent community without downvoting that allows humor, and the majority of the community feels that way- that is not a community I want to be a part of.

And as I said, it is more than that. I am wasting hours upon hours here not creating anything- not using my time in a practical way. That is really bad, and it is an addiction really. I will be up on HN until 1-2am when I need to wake up and take care of the kids the next day. It is the heroin of the development and IT scene and I want off of it badly. So, I'm quitting again.

You can take this as constructive criticism and try to do something about it like eliminate downvoting, limit the ability to comment until you've spent a month on the site, stop anonymous user creation and use Google and FB auth, and limit time on the site somehow to stop HN addiction.

Quite != quit. lts.
