Do we really need a front page story about every updated Apple product with a link to Apple's marketing for said product? When the brand new Nokia devices were announced this morning, they were flagged off the front page with people saying it wasn't relevant to HN. How is a minor incremental upgrade to an old product any more relevant?
question of relevancy is driven by the market. If the markets (HN viewers) up vote it then it goes to the top if not something else goes up there. As for the iPad Air, I wouldn't call it a minor update. I think it's the biggest update they had since they moved to retina a few years ago. I personally never liked the bulk or the weight of my retina iPad. So this is a first time, I have found a need to upgrade. To that extent, I do so much online reading before going to bed, that I began having problem on my left hand from holding for too long. I think the lighter and thiner iPad is a welcome relief.
Apple kept saying that; "this is the biggest leap forward"... how so? It's thinner, like it is every year. It's got this year's processor in it, which it does every year. It's got a higher resolution screen, like it does ever year. It's an incremental update, not a new product. It's the same upgrade as last year's upgrade.

There's news I care about: I care about the new Nokia devices. That's relevant to me and plenty of others, considering the number of votes and comments the articles had. That's actually new stuff. Yet they got removed from HN because they got flagged.

Check out my comment that I posted hours before the Apple announcement:

" I think the announcement of new phones and tablets in new form factors with new apps and an upcoming software update from Nokia would be relevant, moreso than a slightly thinner iPad with the same internals and software as the already released iPhone 5s, which will undoubtedly be filling the front page later today."

Prescient, huh? Looks like I can see the future. But what I can't see is the articles that are relevant to my interests, because for some reason anything Microsoft related gets instantly removed from the front page, unless it's bad news. Whether or not you think this is a problem, it's actually a pretty big fucking problem.

...it's actually a pretty big fucking problem.

LOL, what is it about Apple that brings out so much ANGER on the internet? Seriously, I'm just having a field day, reading all the comments on HN, Ars, The Verge, Reddit, etc. with so many people RAGING. Talking about how much they HATE Apple's products, and it's BULLSHIT that Apple gets so much press coverage.

You don't care about Apple products, yet here you are getting pissed about them and commenting on an Apple-related article.

If all you care about is the new Nokia / Microsoft stuff from today, there is plenty of coverage about that also. Here are a couple links to get you started:

http://winsupersite.com/mobile-devices/nokia-lumia-2520-prev...

Also, go to news.google.com and click on the "Technology" section. There are plenty of links about non-Apple stuff, including more about Microsoft and Nokia.

No, no, I'm not complaining about the coverage Apple is getting. I understand that people use and like Apple products, and that they want to hear and discuss news about it. I'm complaining that the devices that I do care about, the news I do want to see and discuss, are being removed from the site. The only products announcements that can exist are those from Apple and to a lesser extent, Google.

There are people here who use Microsoft products and like the Nokia phones. I like discussing the news with them, especially news of the magnitude we've seen this morning. However, some people feel that this is not within our rights and having Nokia/Microsoft news on their site is inappropriate. This is a big fucking problem. I like HN, I really do. It's a great platform and there are some great people here. But if you think it would be better if the only products that could be discussed with excitement are Apple products, that's a big problem. This isn't Apple Hacker News. Hackers develop for Windows too; hackers use Windows Phone too. What I'm upset about is that the Nokia/Microsoft news was flagged off the front page, and, just like I predicted, the Apple news (no matter how minor) floods in right on cue.

I know there are other sites talking about Nokia and Microsoft. That's fine, but I really like HN and I really like discussing exciting news with this community. That can't happen if the news that we find exciting is being improperly flagged by a band of anti-Microsoft zealots. You might notice I've commented on a lot of the Apple news today. It's interesting, don't get me wrong. I'm not going to try to get Apple-related articles off the front page, because I'm not a fucking asshole. But don't point me to a different god damned site. I don't hate Apple products. I hate holier-than-thou zealots who feel that anyone who uses a product they don't like is a second-class citizen.

But why am I arguing with you? You've made it perfectly clear that you don't feel that I'm welcome here. You'd rather live in an Apple bubble, pretending that everything they do is better than everything the competition is doing. The world would be better if Apple was the only corporation on the planet, right?

Again. So. Much. ANGER.

RAAAAAGGGGGEEEE!!!!!!!

Addressing your last paragraph:

But why am I arguing with you? You've made it perfectly clear that you don't feel that I'm welcome here. You'd rather live in an Apple bubble, pretending that everything they do is better than everything the competition is doing. The world would be better if Apple was the only corporation on the planet, right?

Please point me to the part of my comment where I said any of these things. I haven't voted or commented on ANY other Apple-related articles on this site. Seriously, check my history. I made no comment about Apple at all. My only comments have been me laughing at how angry / emotional you sound.

By pointing me to other sites, you're both making the impression that the news I care about doesn't belong here and implying that I'm not wanted.
I'm sorry you feel that way. I simply looked on the front page of HN, and didn't see any Microsoft / Nokia-related articles. So I went out and found some on another site. I can't control what is on the front page of HN. All I can do is search for alternatives. There are a lot of things that I am interested in that I rarely see on HN myself. Instead of feeling like the HN community has personally attacked me, I just browse a variety of sites.
