I Having read it one thing that strikes me was why they could not isolate his wifi. I say that as they state they had a clear view of the house and certainly would of been aware how to make a good ranged directional ariel. Also logging signal strength on a walk around the target area would of enabled them to narrow downs much quicker than they appear to of done.
The efforts involved and cost, would of been easier to send them a new top of the line apple computer already bugged. Heck nice keyboard modified is cheap and easier.
In the end it boils down too - don't open unsolicited attachments. Also attachments from strangers is a complete no no.
